Addition War (Math Card Game)
Make addition fluency practice fun
I love playing this math card game with my kindergarten daughter! She is starting to be a flexible thinker and is using some additive thinking skills while she plays.
If your child is learning or struggling to remember their addition math facts, grab a deck of cards and play this easy card game.
This game is a fun way to practice addition facts...and it's way more meaningful than flashcards or timed tests.
Addition War
Skills: Addition fluency
Grades: K-3
Materials:
Deck of cards
Players: 2 - 4 players
Game Setup:
Jacks, Queens, and Kings are worth 10
Ace = 1 or 11 (depending on your child's addition skills)
How to Play: Addition War Math Card Game
Step 1: Each player turns two cards face up, reads the addition sentence, and gives an answer.
Example: If a player turns over a 4 and a 5, they say, “4 and 5 is 9” 4+5=9
Step 2: The person with the largest sum is the winner.
Example: If another player turns over a 6 and a 7 they say, “6 and 7 is 13.” Since 13 is a larger sum than 9, that person wins all the cards.
War: If two or more players have a sum that is the same, then it’s war!
Each player puts 4 cards face down and turns up 2 of them. The player with the highest sum wins the war and gets all the cards.
Options for ending the game:
Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and the person with the most cards at the end of the time is the winner. OR
If one player runs out of cards, then the other player is the winner.
